The Cuban opposition party Socialist Democratic Current (Corriente Socialista Democrática
Cubana) was invited to participate in the XXIII Congress of the  Socialist International in Athens, from 30.06.2008 to 2.07.2008.

Nevertheless, the Cuban authorities did not permit its secretary general, Manuel Cuesta Morúa, to leave his country.

This is why Cuesta Morua delegated Dirk Van den Broeck, international representative of the organisation, to assist the Congress.

Van den Broeck handed over personally a brochure of the democratic left in Cuba to the hundredths of socialist delegates from all over the world, among them presidents, ex-presidents, party leaders and members of their respective parliaments.

The brochure, in Spanish and English, includes a message of Manuel Cuesta Morúa directed to all assistants.

Joint Declaration

The social-democratic political organizations, Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) and Un Nuevo Tiempo (UNT), both from Venezuela and Arco Progresista, from Cuba, committed to freedom, social justice, human rights and the rule of law sign the following declaration and promise hereby to:

1. Work together in the defense of human rights, society's welfare, and social equality and justice, democratic institutionalization, basic freedoms, pluralism and democratic alternatives in our respective countries, Venezuela and Cuba, within the framework of respect to national sovereignty.

2. Promote the solidarity between our peoples and respective organizations trough mechanism and initiatives within the framework of democracy and national sovereignty. We will also work in the promotion of the Carta Democrática Interamericana, and other institutions as well, within Latin America and at the world level that promote democratic values and respect to human rights.

3. Encourage political, cultural, social and educative programs that give the political citizen the tools to defend its participation in the State decisions, avoiding populist manipulations. Likewise, we will work together in the fight against corruption.

4. Work together in the strengthening of a center-left alternative at the continental level. To achieve this, our organizations will articulate the Havana Progressive Forum, inviting other social, political and intellectual organizations to take part in this effort, in order to encourage the permanent debate on the current challenges that the democratic left faces in Latin America.

5. Mutually support us, within the Socialist International, in order to find the support of the rest of the organizations and to encourage a permanent exchange with other progressive parties or institutions, outside Latin America.

6. Work for a Latin-American integration based on the free exchange between its citizens. A Latin America of the citizens, rather than one of the States. Work for peace and good relations between our States and nations trough the promotion of  peaceful solutions to ethnical or political conflicts.

7.Fight terrorism in all its manifestations, coming from States, institutions, political groups or persons, and regardless of its nature or ideological vision.
